SETTING THE GRADE
Wood grades indicate how many natural features a wood floor has, and they are graded according to the number and size of the features on each board, such as knots, sap, and tonal variation. We take grading seriously and hold ourselves to a higher standard than you’ll find elsewhere in the industry – you could even say that we set the grade!
PRIME GRADE This grade is our most refined and only allows for a limited amount of natural features. Only a small number of knots and black pin knots are permitted. These are usually up to 10mm and 5mm respectively. There is occasional lighter sapwood to the edges. Wider widths and larger formats often show more features than narrower and smaller elements. Prime grade will also contain some colour variation.
NATURE GRADE This is our most popular grade as it has a very natural look. It celebrates the beauty of real wood and includes both clearly defined heartwood and occasional lighter sapwood of up to 30% of the boards’ width. It often displays closed heartwood, live knots and irregular grain patterns. Open knots and holes will be filled. Colour variation is normal from board to board and floor to floor.
CHARACTER GRADE This grade is mainly represented in our Crafted Textures collection. These floors are high impact, bursting with character, and full of variation. We utilise the broadest selection of woods’ natural features to deliver this grade. This includes some wonderful large knots, small checks across growth rings, unlimited sap, and split details to the ends of boards. Wide colour variation and a super natural feel are delivered.
SELECT GRADE Select balances the cleaner feel of prime grade with some of the features found in nature grade. Like prime grade, there is occasional lighter sapwood to the edges, however it will contain more knots. This grade will also contain irregular grain and closed heartwood. Select grade will also contain colour variation.
