Issue 9 | tedtodd.co.uk JOURNAL Jubilee THE ISSUE

OUR PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE As the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee captures the imagination of the nation and many people all over the UK celebrate our first British monarch to celebrate 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth, we are proudly paying homage to the best of all things British. As a Great British Brand, our heritage dates back almost 30 years (granted this isn’t as long as the Queen’s!) but it got us thinking at Ted Todd HQ about how we started, where we are now and what the future holds. As an innovative and independent business, our passion for wood, respect for nature and unrivalled flooring expertise have been helping our customers feel good since 1993. And we are confident they will continue to do so for many more years to come... Here’s to the next 70 years of leading the wood flooring industry.

Much like a sustainable well-managed forest, the Ted Todd ecosystem is made up of many different branches across our locations in Cheshire, London, California and New York. Our family tree gives you a small glimpse into some of our British natives.

THE MAJESTIC OAK Robert Walsh, Founder The wise English Oak is strong and resilient, holding a special place in British culture, history and hearts. Robert founded Ted Todd in 1993, when after spending a summer restoring Reclaimed Pine floorboards in his parent’s back garden he received his first order for 40 square yards of timber for a barn conversion. As a former philosophy student Robert has a can-do attitude and entrepreneurial spirit that leads the business to continually innovate.

THE STURDY ASH Matt Lee, Woodworks Production Manager

NEW FOR 2022

British craftspeople have worked with Ash timber for years. It is one of the strongest hardwoods and absorbs shocks without splintering. Matt started as an apprentice over 12 years ago. Since then, he’s worked his way through the ranks to learn everything there is to know about our products and is a dedicated and highly respected member of the team. Matt has recently been appointed Production Manager for our brand-new Woodworks design, crafting and production facility. This expansive workshop was opened in line with our ambitions to further champion Great British Manufacturing.

THE VERSATILE FAVOURITE: TED TODD WINNOW Brand new to our Warehouse Collection, Winnow is set to be a best seller. Warm and versatile, it’s available as a Wide Plank and Herringbone design and has an undulating texture and brushed finish.

A FUTURE CLASSIC: TED TODD KENNET

Due to the popularity of Kennet Plank, we’ve added a Herringbone design of this classic medium brown floor to our Project Collection. With distinctive grain detail, Kennet is a steadfast staple with a premium feel. Call 020 8629 3057 to order a free sample. ON THE COVER Flying the flag for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, our Union Jack has been handcrafted in our Cheshire workshops using English Estate Oak, Jarrah Heartwood and Reclaimed Elm from 1520.

THE DETERMINED BIRCH Alyce Cross, Product Development Executive

The Silver Birch is a fast-growing species. Its silvery-white bark may look delicate, but under lies a strong willfulness to grow. In the four years since Alyce started her apprenticeship training, she has undoubtedly become a crucial part of our Product Development Team. Alyce is highly organised, down to earth and genuinely cares about our planet.

A ROYAL WALK THROUGH TIMBER HISTORY

1760 GEORGE III

1901 EDWARD VII

War Office Pine (1910) We’re very fortunate to be the custodians of beams from the Old War Office. This neo-baroque building in London’s Whitehall, built in 1901, became the administration centre of the British Army during both World Wars. This pine’s charming appearance reflects the personality of the monarch of the day, Edward VII.

OUR WOODS WITH INTERESTING HISTORIES

Antique English Oak (1785) Our English Oak is often referred to as ‘Parkland Oak’ because it was allowed to grow wild, making it a unique wood much like George’s unique reign. It requires expert skill to use on floors, with the restoration stage requiring the use of our artisans’ most careful handcrafting techniques.

Many homeowners know and love our Ted Todd floors made from sustainable new woods - but did you know, we also have an extensive portfolio of antique and reclaimed floors as part of our Woodworks collections? If you’re looking for something extra special for your home, our Woodworks collections might be for you. All of our Woodworks by Ted Todd floors are available for purchase and install by your retailer and are handmade to order in our Cheshire workshops. To celebrate Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee, we invite you to experience our very best Woodworks reclaimed antique woods, from some of Britain’s most influential monarchical reigns.

1837 QUEEN VICTORIA

1509 HENRY VIII

1952 TO PRESENT ELIZABETH II

1625 CHARLES I

Ancient Elm (1520) Rich in character and

texture, it is hard to beat the rustic charm of antique original face Elm. This is one our oldest and most magnificent woods, featuring perfect imperfections and characterful details throughout. The wood has been dated to 1520, during the middle of King Henry VIII’s reign.

Bridgewater Pine (1860) This North American Pitch Pine was reclaimed from the Bridgewater Docks on the banks of the River Mersey. The wood itself dates back to 1860 and is dimensionally one of the most impressive woods we’ve ever reclaimed due to its extraordinary width. It’s also incredibly hardwearing and strong, much like the reign of Queen Victoria.

Galion English Oak (2022) The floor of Kings and Queens, Galion is crafted using the finest English Oak. Sourced responsibly from woodlands across the UK the oak is Quarter Sawn, making it a rare and beautiful commodity, with exceptionally straight grain patterns and medullary rays throughout. Boasting a 6-8mm wear layer, this floor offers remarkable longevity - just like our longest-reigning monarch.

Antique Pitch Pine (1630) Ever since Charles I landed at Charlestown this wood has been a material valued by the navy – shipped across to the West Coast of Great Britain and used to build our industrial heartlands in the 19th century. Charles claimed every piece of this exceptional material as his own, marking the beams with his personal seal.

If you’d like to consider using an antique or reclaimed wood floor in your home, please speak to one of our Woodworks specialists on 020 8629 3057 , or visit our Cheshire or London Design Centres.

MEET ANNE-MARIE, THE HOME-OWNER

Interior designer Anne-Marie Leigh usually spends her time designing for her portfolio of residential clients across the South East. However, for today’s article, Anne-Marie tells us how she introduced grace and poise into her own traditional 1930s home. We had the privilege of meeting with Anne-Marie in her beautiful Surrey home, whom she shares with her husband Mark, sons Louis (15), Max (13) and four British Shorthair cats. Anne-Marie specialises in luxury residential properties in and around Surrey and London. “We tend to work on full house refurbishments and extensions to provide practical, functional spaces creating timeless designs for our clients to live in and enjoy.” A ‘modern take on traditional’ is how we would describe Anne-Marie’s style. Combining a soft colour palette with Furrow Herringbone and Furrow Plank in the open-plan downstairs creates a seamless flow throughout the property. “Having used Ted Todd on design projects for clients and always being thrilled with the results, when it came to renovating our home I just knew we had to have a Ted Todd floor. We get so many compliments from friends and family.” says Anne-Marie. “Colour and texture were really important themes for our home. We wanted it to be light in colour with some variation - that’s the beauty of using a natural product.”

Layering natural texture throughout your home creates interest and depth.

...WITH TED TODD

& ANNE-MARIE

THE INTERIOR DESIGNER Before setting up Anne-Marie Leigh Interior Design in 2014, Anne-Marie retrained at the respected KLC Design School in Chelsea. When asked why she believes quintessential British style continues to captivate the world of interior design, she remarked, “The British country house style is steeped in history, culture, heritage and tradition, which appeals to homeowners all over the world, especially the American market. British design is synonymous with classic quality craftsmanship and luxurious textiles, inevitably creating timeless spaces that are admired by future generations.” Much of Anne-Marie’s inspiration is drawn from across the pond, too, including US designers Shea McGee and Kelly Wearstler. Did you know? We also have offices in New York and California!

Ted Todd’s Furrow Herringbone is beautiful and timeless - we knew it would look amazing in our house.

ANNE-MARIE LEIGH’S TOP TIP “When designing a home it’s important to think about the flow of the rooms and ensure you use colours that complement each other. It’s also great to layer texture all through your home from flooring, rugs, soft furnishings and furniture.”

RAYMAN BOOZER Principal Bedroom New York based AD100 designer Rayman Boozer was inspired by the 90s film ‘The Pillow Book’ to create a romantic and sensual space.
